1) What are CGA valve for medical uses?

Medical device design engineers have found that proportional control technology is ideal where precise performance is required in variable pressure or flow applications. Often considered more complex than on/off solenoid valves, proportional valves offer a reliable, cost-effective and compact solution for fast response and consistent control.

Some typical applications for proportional valves in the medical field include

2) Check Application Requirements

When selecting a proportional valve, the medical device design engineer needs to consider both the medium and the variable to be controlled. Gases (air, oxygen, CO2 or other gases) are often the media and proportional valves can control many variables, including force, position, temperature or level. However, in this article, we will focus on the two main variables of pressure and flow.

After the design engineer determines the variables to be controlled, the next step is to determine the other application criteria for the valve, such as

The medium, which will affect the required valve construction or material

Inlet pressure and maximum controlled output pressure

Required flow range

Medium and ambient temperature

Other environmental factors, such as location (hospital, clinical or portable) and any weight or space constraints

Power consumption, especially for portable/mobile applications

Special requirements related to medical devices to comply with FDA or other regulatory agencies


3) Adjustment for proper control - electronic and mechanical interface

As mentioned earlier, a proportional control valve will adjust its opening in response to a variable current input. However, for this function to work in a system, feedback and control are necessary. The control is used to set the parameter (flow, pressure or other variable) and the feedback is used to measure the progress towards that goal. The set value is then compared to the result using electronics and the command signal is changed to achieve the desired set value.

In the case of proportional pressure control, a typical "system" consists of two valves, a pressure sensor, and an electronic controller. The electronic controller acts as the brain of the unit, allowing the user to provide set values and compare/control the results so that the valves act in a way that quickly achieves the desired results. A transducer is used to provide the controller with the required information. The valve of course forms the working part of the system and alternately increases or decreases the pressure at the target position by allowing the introduction or removal of air (or other gases). Depending on the system dynamics, the valve can be actuated constantly or reach a steady state. Changing demands will keep the system active and the controller can overcome the pressure variations input to the valve.
